The Best Exercise for Aging Muscles

A great article that discusses exercise and the how we might undo the limit the muscle damage that occurs from aging.

Aging causes damage all the way down to the cellular level. Muscle cell damge is especially severe because they do not regenerate easily and they become weaker.

In a research study, interval training in younger subjects resulted in changes in 274 genes, compared with 170 genes for those who exercised more moderately and 74 for the weight lifters. In the older subjects, the changes were even more significant with 400 genes working differently, compared with 33 for the weight lifters and only 19 for the moderate exercisers.

So what does this mean?

  • It is never too late to exercise

  • Use high intensity exercise to produce the most effective changes in your body
